Golf courses open for the season

Dust off your soft-spiked shoes and clubs and get ready to book a tee time - if you haven’t already! Oak Bluff is close to several beautiful 18-hole golf courses that are open to the public.

Golf can be a great escape. It’s a sport that requires a great deal of focus - but can also be a relaxing group or family activity. Here are a few nearby courses:

Bridges Golf Course 10 River Road, Starbuck
For those just old enough to start swinging, kids are being offered the chance to learn golf for free this June. For the first three Saturdays of June, kids ages 6 to 11 can take part in one hour lessons to learn the fundamentals of golf. The lessons are being sponsored by Rona as a means to give all children the opportunity to play. Call to pre-register. All adult-skill levels are welcome to play the 18-hole course, or for those interested in friendly competition - men’s, women’s, and couples night leagues are available and include dinner specials and prizes.  Must wear proper golf attire.

Kingswood Golf Course  Highway #247 3/4 mile west of La Salle
This course is perfect for beginners because it is the first in Canada to have a 15-inch cup option on the green. Players can choose to play to the standard hole, or the 15-inch wide cup depending on their skill level. This course offers a variety of memberships, including a membership for the driving range. Practice makes perfect.

River Oaks Golf Course 5km south of Perimeter Hwy on Waverley Street (look for River Oaks sign)
This course offers men’s and women’s leagues on Monday and Tuesday nights. You can join as a single golfer or bring a foursome. The league includes weekly contests and prizes and a year-end banquet. Private lessons are also available for anyone wanting to learn the basics or perfect their stance. Must wear proper golf attire.

John Blumberg Golf Course 4540 Portage Avenue in Headingley
With 27 holes, this course features their championship Emerald 18-hole course and the family-friendly Gold 9-hole course. Each can be booked for individual games, for a 10-game pass or for a full season pass. The course also gives you the opportunity to host a weekly golf league. Twenty participants are required for the weekly tournament over an eight week period. Private lessons are available for players of all skill levels: from the junior golfer right through to the low handicapper. Large and small baskets are available for the driving range.

A full game of golf isn’t for everyone. So if you’re more interested in putting, mini golf isn’t far away at Thunder Rapids Amusement Park 5058 Portage Avenue, The Golf Dome 1205 Wilkes Avenue or Tuxedo Golf Course, also home to a 18-hole course and driving range, 400 Shaftesbury Blvd.
