  • Snow much to Enjoy in Winter!

Winter sometimes makes us want to stay inside as much as possible, spending time watching TV and keeping warm. Getting active outdoors is actually the best way to keep your body warm and healthy in the chilly months.

Let your inner figure skater shine! (Or hold the hands of a little skater in training). Every Friday night at Oak Bluff Recreation Centre your family is welcome to get together with friends in the community for a free skate on the outdoor rink. The skate goes from 6:45 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. and is open to all skill levels.  Who knows? This could be your year to finally learn that backwards figure eight.

Or, for the budding hockey player in your life, the rink is also open from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday for Sticks and Pucks – nets are supplied, but make sure to bring your own stick and a helmet for safety.

Down the road, Fort Whyte Alive has some great outdoor activities for the whole family. The Richardson Rrrun Toboggan Slide is one of the longest in the city, sloping down a big hill, and guaranteed to give you an exciting rush. Guided Nordic Walking tours run every Saturday and are sure to get your blood pumping. For a less vigorous walk, the centre also offers a guided interpretive hike every Sunday at 2 p.m. Snowshoe rentals, skating and cross-country skiing are also available.

For those who want to take their outdoor fitness to the next level, the Running Room on the corner of Grant and Kenaston offers run clubs twice a week year-round. The group can offer advice for what to wear and answer any questions you might have about winter running. Runningroom.org

Of course, with all these activities keep health and safety in mind. Check the weather before you go outside and dress appropriately.

  • Halloween frights and delights!

With Halloween just a couple weeks away it’s time to get in the spooky mindset with activities around Winnipeg. There are a number of activities for those who love to be scared silly or for those who don’t want to be scared at all.

  • Hit the ice this winter!

In Manitoba we have snow for almost half the year. The best thing you can do is take advantage of the weather and have some fun.

  • Boost your fall routine

Creating a routine always feels easier in the fall, making it the perfect time of year to learn a new skill or get active in the community. The Macdonald-Headingley Recreation District has a number of programs for kids, new parents, adults and seniors starting this month.

  • What’s in season right now? Ask a farmer.

Remember visits to your grandma's farm as a kid, pulling a carrot right from the ground and eating it even if it had a little dirt on it? Remember how good the sweet, fresh flavour tasted as you crunched into it? This weekend, take a short family field trip to St. Norbert Farmers' Market and have a fresh-from-the-ground carrot again or some other fresh-picked fruit or veggies.

  • Staycation — fun stuff to do around the neighbourhood in July

If you didn’t plan a family getaway this summer there's still plenty of activities to tire the family out, and they’re only a short drive away.
