Snow much to Enjoy in Winter!

Winter sometimes makes us want to stay inside as much as possible, spending time watching TV and keeping warm. Getting active outdoors is actually the best way to keep your body warm and healthy in the chilly months.

Let your inner figure skater shine! (Or hold the hands of a little skater in training). Every Friday night at Oak Bluff Recreation Centre your family is welcome to get together with friends in the community for a free skate on the outdoor rink. The skate goes from 6:45 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. and is open to all skill levels.  Who knows? This could be your year to finally learn that backwards figure eight.

Or, for the budding hockey player in your life, the rink is also open from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday for Sticks and Pucks – nets are supplied, but make sure to bring your own stick and a helmet for safety.

Down the road, Fort Whyte Alive has some great outdoor activities for the whole family. The Richardson Rrrun Toboggan Slide is one of the longest in the city, sloping down a big hill, and guaranteed to give you an exciting rush. Guided Nordic Walking tours run every Saturday and are sure to get your blood pumping. For a less vigorous walk, the centre also offers a guided interpretive hike every Sunday at 2 p.m. Snowshoe rentals, skating and cross-country skiing are also available.

For those who want to take their outdoor fitness to the next level, the Running Room on the corner of Grant and Kenaston offers run clubs twice a week year-round. The group can offer advice for what to wear and answer any questions you might have about winter running. Runningroom.org

Of course, with all these activities keep health and safety in mind. Check the weather before you go outside and dress appropriately.

What is Pickle-ball?

Pickle-ball is a racquet sport that seemingly combines a badminton court with tennis rules and ping pong paddles. The biggest difference is the no-volley zone in front of the net. Two or four players use their paddles to hit a perforated “wiffle ball” back and forth. The game has grown in recent years and is now played in the United States, Canada, India and Spain.
